The Champions League draw has thrown up some mouth-watering ties. It promises to be another exciting winter of European football, writes Rob Treloar.
Manchester United may not appear to have the toughest of groups on paper but in reality last season’s runners up face some very tricky ties in the group stages. Istanbul and Moscow are never easy places to visit but that is what Sir Alex Ferguson’s side face having been drawn with CSKA Moscow and Besiktas. Perhaps surprisingly, the unknown quantity in Group A are German Champions Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg make their fist ever Champions League appearance this season, after beating Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title last term. Although they are the newcomers, the German side will certainly not be the whipping boys of the group and are in fact favourites to qualify for the knockout stages behind Manchester United. With bwin, you can get 31/20 on Manchester United and Wolfsburg finishing 1st and 2nd respectively.
Group C has perhaps the biggest clash of all, as bwin sponsored AC Milan and Real Madrid were drawn together. Marseille and FC Zurich complete the group but it will surely be the Italian and Spanish giants who battle it out for top spot. After their huge summer spending spree Real will be looking to make an instant impact in the Champions League. However, they are notoriously cold starters, and with Ronaldinho and Pato starting the season so strongly for Milan, it could be the Rossoneri who top the group. At 11/4 there is great value in the group finishing in the following order: 1. AC Milan 2. Real Madrid 3. Marseille 4. FC Zurich
The two London clubs, Chelsea and Arsenal have both been given favourable draws. Although Chelsea must face Porto and Atletico Madrid, the West London club should top the group comfortably. Arsenal will face AZ Alkmar, Olympiacos and Standard Liege and realistically the Gunners should win the group at a canter. Liverpool face trickier group having been drawn to play Lyon and Fiorentina. You can get combined odds of 89/50 if you back Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool to all win their groups.
Having signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan in the summer, it was almost fate that the Barcelona would be drawn to play the Italian Champions. Of course, Samuel Eto’o moved to Inter as part of the Ibrahimovic deal, and he will be keen to show Barca that they were wrong to let him go. With bwin you can get 21/10 on Inter pipping Barcelona to top spot in Group G.
