Michael Owen was delighted after Sir Alex Ferguson has offered him a new one-year contract extension. Former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker has been struggling with his fitness, injuries, and his playing time due to rise of fellow striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez. Nevertheless, 31-year-old striker made it clear that he wanted to stay in the club. Owen said: “I’m delighted to have agreed on a one-year extension to my contract. To play alongside so many great players, under an exceptional manager, and in front of so many incredibly passionate supporters, is a real inspiration. I can’t wait for next season to start.”

Ferguson stunned everyone when he handed Owen a spot on the bench for Manchester United’s Champions League final match against Barcelona ahead of the club’s top scorer in Premier League Dimitar Berbatov. Ferguson said he is delighted with having Owen for another year at the club hoping he will be able to give him more opportunities to play in the season ahead. Its unfortunate Michael didn’t get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable. I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season.”
