Premier League weekend bes round-up

By

The Premier League is just three weeks old but already there has been no shortage of drama. Aston Villa’s 3-1 win at Anfield on Monday night consigned Liverpool to their second defeat of the season, equalling their tally for the whole of last season in just three games!

Liverpool’s dodgy start to the season is somewhat surprising, but what isn’t surprising is the way Rafa Benitez has blamed everyone but himself. Referees, Lucas, Fernando Torres and even mercurial captain Steven Gerrard have all come in for criticism from Rafa, but of course, it couldn’t possibly be his fault, could it?! Defeats at the hands of Tottenham and Villa obviously had nothing to do with the fact that Rafa was tactically outmanoeuvred by Harry Redknapp and Martin O’Neill.

Only a manager as arrogant and egotistical as Benitez would publicly criticise his two best players. The fact of the matter remains that when it comes to domestic competition, Rafa doesn’t have the tactical nous or the nerve to crack it. This weekend Liverpool face a tough trip to the Reebok. Bolton are still looking for their first win of the season, and although they were poor at Hull last weekend, they will be fired up for the game against the Reds. If Gary Megson can take heed from the examples set by messers Redknapp and O’Neill, then at 5/1 Bolton are a great bet to win at home. Elsewhere, early pace-setters Chelsea are at home to Owen Coyle’s Burnley. The Clarets won’t be daunted by the prospect of travelling to the Bridge having already successfully dispatched Man United and Everton this season. But Chelsea have started the season in fine form and it would be a brave man who bets against them, even if they are priced at 1/10!

The biggest game of the weekend sees Manchester United entertain Arsenal at Old Trafford. Many people wrote off Arsenal’s title chances prior to the season, but the Gunners have started like a team who mean business, sweeping aside all who stand before them. Admittedly they have yet to be seriously tested, which is why Saturday evening’s match will be so intriguing. Last season the gulf in class between the two side’s was evident in the Champions League semi-final, have Wenger’s young guns closed the gap on United? Arsenal are great value at 11/5 but the draw is probably a better bet at 23/10.

Another side who have started the season strongly are Spurs. The Lilywhites have won all three of their opening matches and will be looking to continue their run at home to Birmingham on Saturday. Jermain Defoe is in scintillating form, having scored four goals in three games. Defoe is 7/2 to open the scoring at White Hart Lane. Couple that with a Spurs win and you can get 127/25 with bwin.
Treloar’s tip: Home wins for Chelsea (v Burnley), Tottenham (v Birmingham) and Stoke (v Sunderland) and a Man United v Arsenal draw will give you combined odds of 1027/100
