Premiership football latest news
ByLet the battle begins!
With the top four virtually picking itself, the race for the title promises to be about as predictable as a night out with Jordan. However, at the other end of the table things are far from predictable as any three of nine teams could realistically face the drop. Here we asses the contenders…
Premiership football latest news from Birmingham:
Of all the promoted teams Birmingham stand the best chance of surviving thanks largely to the experience they have throughout their squad. The likes of Stephen Carr, Franck Queudrue, Lee Bowyer, Barry Ferguson, James McFadden and Kevin Phillips have bags of Premier League experience between them and when you add young talents like Joe Hart and Cameron Jerome into the equation, Birmingham have a pretty decent squad. Alex McLeish will know a lot depends on making St Andrew’s a fortress again, nut the Blues should have enough quality to survive.
Premiership football latest news from Blackburn
Sam Allardyce has added some quality to his squad in the form of Michel Salgado from Real Madrid and loan signing Franco Di Santo from Chelsea. Allardyce is yet to replace Roque Santa Cruz, and unless he does, Rovers may struggle to score goals, but in the main ‘Big Sam’ will make Blackburn, tough, uncompromising and difficult to beat, and they’ll finish clear of the relegation zone.
Premiership football latest news from Bolton
Gary Megson steered Bolton a respectable 13th place finish last season and having added the likes of Zat Knight, Paul Robinson and Sean Davis to his squad the Trotters should be more than capable of maintaining their mid-table status. Goals from Kevin Davis and midfield man Matt Taylor will be crucial though to avoid a relegation dog-fight. Bolton will need to get off to a decent start to avoid getting dragged into the relegation battle.
Premiership football latest news from Burnley
The best thing Burnley have got in their favour is that, much like Stoke and Hull last season, they have been written off before they have even started. Owen Coyle will be happy that his team have no expectations to live up to and can just go about proving the so called ‘experts’ wrong. It is undoubtedly going to be tough for the Clarets, but they can take heart from the example Stoke set last season. Coyle does need to add to his strike force before the transfer window closes though, as he is short of firepower, and that might be the difference between staying up or not.
Premiership football latest news from Hull
Second season syndrome began about half way through the first season for the Tigers. Although they looked okay at Stamford Bridge, Phil Brown’s inability to add any real quality to his squad will prove costly for Hull. Steven Hunt is a good signing but Hull needed another four or five like him. It’ll be another season of struggle for the Tigers only this time without the celebrating (or thankfully the singing) at the end.
Premiership football latest news from Portsmouth
Pompey seem to be in free-fall at present and unless they stop the rot soon they could face very tough season indeed. Having they never really replaced messers Diarra, Muntari and Defoe last season and now to add to their woes they’ve lost Johnson and Crouch too. Pompey need to bring some quality in and quickly! Nico Kranjcar is a great player but he won’t keep the South Coast club up on his own. Unless the take-over is sorted out soon Pompey will face the drop.
Premiership football latest news from Stoke
Tony Pulis is from the ‘old school’ and will ensure his players don’t get affected by ‘second season syndrome’. Stoke’s home record kept them up comfortably last season and it will do the same again this year. Pulis knows how to get his side to play to their strengths. Beattie and Fuller will score goals, and defences will still struggle to cope with Rory Delap’s long throw. As the saying goes; ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’
Premiership football latest news from Wigan
Despite a great start at Aston Villa, Wigan could well find themselves struggling this season. Goals will be the problem for Roberto Martinez’s side although loan striker Scott Sinclair could well be their saviour as the young starlet has plenty of promise. It will be a long season for the Lactics but when all is said and done, they’ll have just about enough to avoid the drop.
Premiership football latest news from Wolves
Mick McCarthy knows all about relegation battles. His experience at Sunderland a few seasons back is something he’ll be keen not to repeat. Like most promoted sides, Wolves biggest problem will be scoring the goals they need to survive. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake may struggle to make the step up, although Kevin Doyle is an excellent acquisition. There is plenty of spirit in McCarthy’s squad, but it may not be enough to keep them afloat.
