After Arsenal’s humiliating 8-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, many people started to talk judgmental about Arsene Wenger. However, his colleague Pep Guardiola stood in defence of the Gunners boss.
Guardiola explained that poor performance by the Arsenal was rather the result of the departure of club’s key players in recent season, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri who had gone to Barcelona and Manchester City, and that the Gunners were forced to play with unfamiliar starting eleven with Jenkinson, Traore and Coquelin, because of the many injured and suspended players. Guardiola pointed out the positive work his counterpart had done for the Arsenal during the past 15 years: “I agree with (Sir) Alex Ferguson’s opinion about (Arsene) Wenger, when he said that he didn’t know if there could be another coach who could do as much as he has for Arsenal during all these years. It’s not just the departure of (Samir) Nasri and Cesc (Fabregas) but also (Jack) Wilshire’s injury that means he can’t play and all the other injuries across the squad. They have always progressed far and been competitive in the Premier League over the past decade, always with a very characteristic style of football. When you think of Arsenal you think of a team that has played very nice football. The winner is not always the good one as the loser is not always the bad one. In sport there are many good things that have nothing to do with winning or losing. I think what Wenger has done for soccer in general…Arsenal is big. Of course you can always go to Manchester’s stadium, who have so many good players, and Arsenal with so many injuries these things can happen.”
Guardiola also keeps an eye on the other Manchester club, City which had brilliant show at White Hart Lane in their 5-1 win against the home team. Spaniard said: “They (Manchester City) can do it (win the Champions League). If you see the players and you see their manager they can do it. Maybe they don’t have the history in the last years to play in the Premiership or Europe, but if you see those names you nominated right now they are awesome. Dzeko, Aguero, Tevez, Silva, Barry, Balotelli, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure. All of them are top, top, top players and they started very good in the Premiership.”

New season in La Liga will provide at least two El Clasico matches between the eternal rivals and two best clubs in Spain Real Madrid and Barcelona. The Catalan club will start new season with two titles already won in Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Real Madrid on the other side is improving, but still they need to learn not to lose points in small games and their performance in matches against Barcelona must be result oriented. Valencia and Villarreal will again be the first candidates for the Champions League spot at the end of the season.
.
In first round Barcelona will host Villarreal at Camp Nou. No one believes that Villarreal will be able to snitch a point from Barca and therefore recommendation for this match is to bet on Barcelona.
Real Madrid will travel to play against last year strugglers Real Zaragoza, the team who managed to be victorious at Santiago Bernabeu. At the beginning of the new season, Zaragoza doesn’t look much better than the season before, so struggling is expected, while anything else than Mourinho’s team victory would be a sensation. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was delighted after his club have won their 12th trophy under his reign as a head coach and he described his players as ‘amazing’.
Before the start of La Liga and Champions League, Barcelona have already added two titles to their club’s cabinet as they brought home Spanish and UEFA Super Cup trophies in one week period.
In UEFA Super Cup 2-0 victory over Porto Messi was the key as he scored one goal and assisted to Cesc Fabregas for the second. Guardiola heaped praise on his players and the gracious midfielder: “We’re very, very happy. Not just with those 12 titles, which is absolutely great, but because it was very difficult to win this. Twelve out of 15 would have been unimaginable but it just shows how great these players are – I never tire of praising them. Considering the time of the season they did extremely well and all the players were there for each other. We all know who Leo is; even with very little training this summer he showed he can be decisive. To win all the titles these guys have in the last three years you need plenty of things, but one of them is a player who can drag everyone along. We have Leo and when you add the others then they are amazing.”
Guardiola also pointed out his team got used to play high-pressure matches: “We played an excellent match considering the conditions. A lot of factors can affect finals; finals like Wembley don’t happen very often. My players are very reliable, they’ve experienced this situation many times before, and their serene confidence comes over time (after time). We have a generation of young players but they’re still very eager to win and they keep impressing me with the way they move forward.”.

Live UEFA Super Cup 2011 result and review – Barcelona vs Porto 2:0
Posted by: Tony McRay | Comments (0)Barcelona was victorious for the fourth time in UEFA Super Cup duel. This time they outplayed Portugal champions and UEFA Europa League winners Porto with a 2-0 on Friday. Cesc Fabregas scored his first goal for Barcelona in his first official appearance for the Catalan club.
Lionel Messi was the first man to score late in the first half. Before his goal he started quietly and looked uncomfortable at the times. Messi created a few chances for his teammates David Villa and Xavi tried from distance before Argentinean brought Barca to lead. Guarin played a poor back-pass into his own area where Messi was waiting alone to get the ball and ground the mistake with a fine shot he put into the empty net..
In the second half, Guardiola’s team continued to attack and after another rash challenge from Rolando, he as he was already booked, earned the red card which eased the job for Barca. The Catalans took the advantage of the situation as Messi created a chance for Fabregas who has entered the game as a substitute in 80th minute. Hw has brought Argentine’s cross down with his chest and volleyed past Helton. Later Guarin had a late challenge on Mascherano and referee had no choice but to send him off which provided Barcelona an easy finish.
This way Barcelona have won their 12th title under coach Pep Guardiola and Messi scored in the only competition he had previously failed to deliver goal.

Live Spanish Super Cup 2011 – Guardiola: The images speak for themselves!
Posted by: Tony McRay | Comments (0)Barcelona sealed their third consecutive Spanish Supercup success 10th in club history. After the match which ended with some ugly scenes, Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was frustrated by his colleague Jose Mourinho’s behaviour.
Following a dangerous foul from Marcelo on Barcelona’s newest signing from Arsenal, Cesc Fabregas, Brazilian got the red card that resulted in a toucgline brawl between the coaching staff and players of both clubs. During the rumble, Mourinho tugged the ear of Guardiola’s assistant Tito Vilanova, before puckering his lips at the coach in aftermath.
The whole incident Guardiola commented: “The images speak for themselves. There are things that should not happen in football (and this is one). This could end badly if unchecked. I can do something with my players, and make sure that they behave their best, but I do not give lessons to anyone.” .
Barcelona’s midfielder Xavi Hernandez described Real’s tactics as ‘pathetic’ and shameful for football, while Pique accused Mourinho of destroying Spanish football: “I hope the brawl isn’t what is talked about – it’s a shame. It’s not the first time it has happened and it’s always the same players. Someone has to take action here – Mourinho is destroying Spanish football. They talk a lot about the Catalans, but the problem is in Madrid.”.
According to these two matches, El Clasico odds will be more interesting than ever this season.

Barcelona took the victory in Spanish Supercup 5-4 in aggregate, after exciting 3-2 second leg win at Camp Nou.
These two matches were perfect introduction into the new season in La Liga which is expected to be the fullfilled with exciting rivalry between the two best team in Spain.
After thrilling first-leg and 2-2 equalizer at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, drama continued at Camp Nou. Goals from Andres Iniesta nad Lionel Messi gave Barcelona 2-1 advantage over Real Madrid. Only goal in a first part of the match scored Cristiano Ronaldo. Karim Benzema delivered an equalizer and Messi once again placed a decider in Real Madrid’s net and secured his team’s third consecutive Spanish Supercup trophy. Marcelo earned red card which invoked ugly scenes on the field involving players and coaches of both club.
In the opening minutes, Ronaldo put Valdes to a test, but the goalkeeper responded well to a challenge. Barcelona fought back with Messi’s perfect pass that brought Iniesta through on goal. Spanish international showed class with nonchalantly scooping the ball over Casillas for Barca’s lead. Only six minutes later Ronaldo put deflected ball in Valdes’ goal from a short range. Both teams exchanged chances, but Messi, just as he did on Sunday, gave his team a half-time lead by flicking the ball into the Casillas’ far corner after chase with Ronaldo.
In the second half Mourinho’s team was able to draw level on 80 minutes after Benzema delivered an equalizer by staying poised amid the scramble around the Valdes’ goal just enough to put the ball behind the powerless goalkeeper.
Extra time was close when substitute Fabregas was introduced as the latest acquisition from Arsenal, just to be involved in building up the attack that Messi turned into the goal with a sublime volley after Adriano’s cross and seal the Barcelona’s third consecutive Spanish Supercup victory.
The match went into chaos when Madrid’s Marcelona wrapped his legs around Fabregas, prompting all people from both benches into the rumble as the officials struggled to regain control. Marcelo, Ozil and David Vill all received red cards for their involvement in melee.

Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger revealed he will spend big money if the right player became available.
After Fabregas departured from Arsenal and transferred to Barcelona, the English Premier League club earned initial fee of 29 million euros. All agree that Arsenal was deprived of substantial leadership and midfield quality.
Six years have past since Arsenal’s last major trophy, but Wenger don’t think his team cannot compete with the best in Premier League this season.
This week the Frenchman has cooled down stories that the Gunners are pursuing Valencia’s highly regarded winger Juan Mata and distanced reports of bringing Shakhtar Donetsk’s Jadson into the club. Joel Campbell is likely to sign and he is more a prospect than immediate first-team player. However, Wenger explained he would pay a high amount if he found the right player: “I will pay 30 million pounds, I will even pay 40 million pounds if I find the right players. But it’s not a question of money, it’s a question of quality we find. I think I have a wrong reputation of not wanting to spend money – I do not want to spend money for average players. We are not frightened to spend money when we think it’s right. Our fans have more reasons to be proud of this club – the values here, the way the club is run, what the club is built (upon) – than being angry with the club. Of course we want to deliver trophies, of course we want to win trophies, who wouldn’t want (that)? But we feel we were very close last year and my regret of course is that we didn’t do it but we are battling on all fronts and were a bit unlucky on all fronts I think.”
Wenger said that Costa Rica youngster Joel Campbell is a gamble ‘worth taking’ and Arsenal agreed deal for the Deportivo Saprissa player that is reportedly worth around 1 million pounds: “Joel is a young prospect, he has talent and he can play right, left or centrally. We took a gamble on him but, from what we have seen, it is worth taking. Sometimes you feel the reputation of the player is punished by the fact he did not have a massive transfer fee. You would like people to look just at the quality of the players and feel if they are Arsenal players or not.”
