Its coming down to the crunch in the World Cup qualifying groups, with the fate of many countries dependent on results this Wednesday, writes Rob Treloar…
England can book their place in South Africa with a win over Croatia at Wembley. Last time the two teams met in London, the Croatians claimed a famous victory, which cost England a place at Euro 2008. This time England are sitting pretty at the top of the group with a 100% record. Even if they fail to beat Croatia, their place at the 2010 World Cup is virtually guaranteed, but messers Terry, Gerrard and co will want to exact revenge on Croatia. Jermain Defoe has scored in the last three England matches but the diminutive striker is still not guaranteed a place in Fabio Capello’s starting line-up. Defoe is 5/1 to score the last goal with bwin. And a draw/England halftime/fulltime result is 3/1 so why not combine the two bets to get odds of 23/1 with bwin?!
Scotland are still in with a chance of making the play-offs but to do so they will need to beat runaway group leaders Holland. The Netherlands have a 100% record in Group 9 and have already qualified for the World Cup, so Scotland will be hoping that Bert van Marwijk rests some of his star players when the Dutch visit Hampden Park. Scotland’s chances of victory will be hampered by James McFadden’s suspension after he picked up a harsh booking against Macedonia on Saturday. Scotland are 13/2 to win the match 1-0 with bwin and Rangers striker Kenny Miller is also 13/2 to score the first goal of the match. A scorecast will give you combined odds of 221/4 with bwin.
Northern Ireland could go top of Group 3 with a win over current table toppers Slovakia. Nigel Worthington’s side have played one more game than Slovakia but after earning a vital point in Poland at the weekend, they have given themselves a great chance of at least making the play-offs. But with confidence high, Northern Ireland will be eyeing automatic qualification. Northern Ireland are 8/5 to win the match, with Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty priced at 11/5 to score. A scorecast will give you combined odds of 183/25 with bwin.
Why not back a home nations treble by selecting wins for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. bwin are offering 1273/100 for the treble!
